In reflecting on the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson, I don’t just see a public figure—I see a man I had the rare honor of knowing up close, side by side, over the course of more than fifteen years. A man whose voice helped shape history, whose presence could fill any room with purpose, and whose quiet moments behind closed doors revealed something even greater—his humanity. I had the privilege of working alongside him on more than 47 different projects, each one not just an assignment, but a lesson… not just in leadership, but in life.

From the first time I stood in the room with him, I could feel it—that undeniable energy. When he walked in, everything shifted. Conversations paused, attention focused, and something powerful settled into the space. Yet beyond the podium, beyond the speeches that moved nations, was a man who listened, who laughed, who gave of himself in ways most never get to see. I learned from him not only as a Reverend, but as a man—how to carry yourself, how to stand firm in purpose, and how to uplift others without needing recognition.

One moment that will forever live in my heart was when he received his doctoral honor from Clark Atlanta University. We wanted to do something special—something unforgettable. So we set out to create a surprise cake in his likeness. And in true form, even without knowing what we were planning, he gave us his time… patiently allowing us to take photos from every angle so we could get it just right. That was him—gracious, present, and giving, even in the smallest moments.

When the cake was finally revealed, for a brief second, the polished, world-renowned leader disappeared—and there stood a man caught completely off guard. Then came that smile… that laugh. A real one. The kind that fills a room and stays with you long after it’s gone. He laughed at himself, with us, and in that moment, reminded us all that greatness doesn’t remove your humanity—it deepens it. We even showed him the process, how it was made, the creativity behind it, and for a moment, he was truly beside himself—not as an icon, but as a man.

There were so many moments like that. Times when he was honored in grand settings, walking slowly through crowds filled with admiration—you could feel the weight of his journey, the impact of his sacrifices, the legacy he carried with every step. And yet, later, in quieter rooms, he would share wisdom, stories, laughter. Those were the moments that shaped me the most. Those were the moments that will stay with me, my family, and my family’s family forever.

Over the years, through every project, every conversation, every shared laugh and lesson, he didn’t just influence what I did—he influenced who I became. He made me a better man. A more thoughtful man. A man who understands that legacy isn’t just what you build, but what you leave inside others.

And now, as I reflect on all those years, I realize something powerful—his presence hasn’t left. It lives on. In me. In everyone who ever stood in his shadow, in his light, or even simply heard his voice. Whether they realize it or not, his impact is woven into the fabric of who we are.

Dr. Reverend Jesse Jackson, thank you—for the opportunities, for the lessons, for the laughter, for the moments both great and small. Thank you for allowing me the honor of walking beside you, learning from you, and witnessing your greatness not just on the stage, but in life. You were more than a leader. More than a reverend. You were a man—a father to many, a teacher to countless, and a light that will never dim.
You will be missed beyond words… but never, ever forgotten.
